So far, has been one of the most challenging things I've attempted. It's a hard job, very physical and emotionally draining, however it's what I've dreamt of since I was a little girl.
In 2014 I made the leap from being a teaching assistant to go back to college and begin the long process of retraining. I started an Animal Management diploma at a local college. I made it a year through the course before I got my job at the veterinary hospital I currently work at.
In 2015 I started my new job and began college again in January 2016, this time doing a diploma in Veterinary Nursing. It's been a long process so far and I've fallen in and out of love with my job more times than I can count. There are the days that make you want to lose all faith in humanity- cruelty cases or animals hit by cars where the driver didn't stop. But there are the amazing days- where a patient who has been critically ill for a month or more finally gets to go home to his family, a day you weren't sure you'd see. Or when you help to welcome a litter of puppies or kittens into the world (a joy I have yet to experience).
You can't save all the animals, but I'm sure as hell gonna try.
